Hollow Shaft And Solid Shaft Encoder

3 Big Differences Between Hollow Shaft And Solid Shaft Encoder

In the world of precision engineering, where every tiny movement counts, the field of encoders plays a key role in capturing motion and converting it into meaningful digital signals. In this article, you’ll learn about the definitions of solid shaft encoders and hollow shaft encoders, their applications, and the differences between hollow shaft and solid shaft encoders. Now, let’s dive in.

The definition of hollow shaft encoder and solid shaft encoder

An encoder is a sensor used to transform position information for rotary or linear motion, converting the motion into a digital signal. Hollow shaft encoders and solid shaft encoders are two commonly used rotary encoders.

Hollow shaft encoder is a kind of rotary encoder, the shaft part is a central hole without shaft center, which can be smoothly connected to the hollow motor shaft. The solid shaft encoder needs to be connected in series on the motor shaft, and its shaft part is a complete solid shaft. The two encoders are structurally different.

The difference between hollow shaft encoder and solid shaft encoder

1. Shaft shape

The shaft of the hollow shaft encoder has no shaft center, and some large-sized wires or pipes can be penetrated in the middle to connect to the motor shaft. The solid shaft encoder needs to be tightly connected to the motor shaft in series, and cannot pass through large-sized wires or pipes.

2. Installation method

Due to the difference in the shaft, the installation method of the hollow shaft encoder is also different from that of the solid shaft encoder. The hollow shaft encoder can be fixed on the motor by clamping, and the installation is very convenient without disassembling the motor. The solid shaft encoder requires the encoder shaft to be directly inserted into the motor shaft, which is cumbersome to install and requires the motor to be disassembled.

3. Scope of use

Depending on the axis, there are differences in the range of use of the two encoders. Hollow shaft encoders are typically used in applications that require mounting on the hollow shaft of the motor, such as turntables, rotary tables, etc. Solid shaft encoders are suitable for conveyors, printing machines and other equipment that require precise speed control.

Application of hollow shaft encoder and solid shaft encoder

Both hollow shaft encoders and solid shaft encoders are widely used in industry. Hollow shaft encoders are often used in applications that require mounting on the hollow shaft of the motor, such as machine tools, winding machines, industrial machinery, etc. On the other hand, solid shaft encoders are suitable for applications that require high-speed rotation, such as printing machines, conveyors, cutting machines, etc.

Conclusion

There are differences between hollow shaft encoders and solid shaft encoders in terms of shaft shape, installation method, scope of use, and application fields. When selecting an encoder, different types of encoders are selected according to different application scenarios and requirements. Choosing the correct encoder can improve the operating efficiency and accuracy of the equipment.
